FAQs About Drain and Toilet Unclogging on Big Island

Why does my drain keep clogging in the same place?

The first clearing made a hole rather than cleaning the pipe. A cable punches through a blockage and pulls out what it catches, leaving the coating on the pipe wall behind. Water flows again, then the opening closes over weeks. If the same line clogs three times, the wall is the problem and jetting is the fix.

Should I use a chemical drain cleaner first?

We prefer you do not. Caustic cleaners sit in the trap, generate heat, and can damage older cast iron or partially blocked lines. They also make the line dangerous for whoever opens it next. If a plunger and hot water have not worked, call instead of escalating chemically.

My house is on a cesspool. Does that change how you clear a clog?

It changes what we check first. On a cesspool, there is no treatment stage. The same backup can mean a blocked line or a system at capacity, each needing different work. We camera the line to tell them apart. Clearing a pipe that runs into a full cesspool restores flow for days, not months.

How do I know if it is the toilet or the main line?

Flush the toilet and watch the other fixtures. If only the toilet is affected, it is usually the trapway. If a tub gurgles, a shower backs up, or water rises elsewhere while the toilet drains, the problem is downstream and shared. Two or more fixtures misbehaving together almost always means the main line.

What can I do to prevent clogs on the Big Island?

Keep grease out of the kitchen line entirely, including what rinses off pans. Flush only waste and toilet paper, especially on a cesspool, because wipes labeled flushable do not break down in a pit. Use hair catchers in showers. If you have a cesspool or septic system, have it inspected and pumped on a schedule instead of waiting for symptoms.

Do I need a permit to have a drain cleared on the Big Island?

No. Hawaii County Code exempts clearing stoppages from a permit, as long as the work does not require replacing or rearranging pipes, valves, or fixtures. If the camera shows the line is broken or collapsed and needs replacing, that crosses into permitted work. We pull the permit under our license and handle the inspection.
