Sizing a Water Heater for Oahu Energy Costs

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Hawaii households paid the highest average residential electricity bills in the nation in 2024, about $213 a month, even though they used the least grid electricity of any state. A water heater that is too large heats water you never use. One that is too small runs out partway through a shower and wears out early.

Permits and Code for Oahu Installations

Most water heater replacements on Oahu need a plumbing permit. The code covers seismic strapping, the temperature and pressure relief valve and where it discharges, drainage, and venting on gas units. Each item is there for safety: a poorly vented gas heater can put carbon monoxide into the home, and a relief line that ends in the wrong place can scald someone or flood a room.

Replace it if the tank body is leaking, rust is showing, or the unit is well past ten years old. Repair makes sense for a failed element, thermostat, valve or anode rod on a unit that is still within its lifespan. We check the condition and give you both options with prices.

Is a permit required for a water heater on Oahu?

In most cases, yes. Replacing a water heater on Oahu typically needs a plumbing permit, and the installation has to meet current code for strapping, relief valve discharge, drainage and venting. We take care of the permit so the work is safe and documented if you sell the home later.

How do I know what size water heater I need?

Size comes down to how many people use hot water, how many showers and appliances run at the same time, and whether the unit is gas or electric. Too small and you run out of hot water. Too large and you pay to heat water you do not use, which adds up quickly at Oahu utility rates.

How long does a water heater installation take?
