That line has to be sized, joined and tested correctly, because a small mistake can lead to a leak. All Aloha Plumbing installs gas lines for homes and businesses on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. When You Need a New Gas Line

Most gas line installations come from one of these projects:

  • Switching an electric appliance to gas, such as a range, dryer or water heater
  • Adding an outdoor kitchen, grill, fire feature or pool heater
  • Building a new home or an addition
  • Replacing an old line that failed an inspection or keeps leaking
  • Moving an appliance during a kitchen remodel

With electricity costs as high as they are in Hawaii, many owners look at gas for water heating and cooking. We can help you decide whether a new line is practical for your property.

How We Install a Gas Line

Every installation follows the same basic steps:

  • Plan and size. We review the appliances you have and plan to add, then size the pipe so each one gets enough gas.
  • Choose the material. Common options include coated steel pipe, flexible corrugated tubing and polyethylene pipe for buried runs. The right choice depends on the route, the pressure and whether the line runs inside, outside or underground.
  • Shut off and connect. We shut off the gas supply, make connections with approved fittings and thread sealants, and install a shutoff valve at each appliance.
  • Pressure and leak test. We test the new piping before it goes into service and check every joint.
  • Restore service. We turn the gas back on, relight pilots where needed and confirm each appliance runs correctly.

If You Smell Gas

A rotten egg smell, a hissing sound near a line or appliance, or plants dying above a buried line can all point to a gas leak. Leave the building, do not use light switches or open flames, and contact your gas provider or emergency services from a safe distance. Once the area is safe, we can locate the problem and repair or replace the line.

Do you install gas lines on all three islands?

Yes. All Aloha Plumbing installs gas lines on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. Our Oahu team works from Waipahu and our Maui team from Makawao. The Big Island is a service area for us, covering towns such as Kailua-Kona, Hilo and Waimea, with arrival windows that depend on location. We give upfront pricing before any gas work begins.

What type of pipe is used for a gas line?

It depends on where the line runs. Coated black steel is common for exposed and interior runs. Flexible corrugated stainless steel tubing is often used inside walls and for appliance connections. Polyethylene pipe is a common choice for buried lines because it resists corrosion. We choose the material based on the route, the gas pressure and local code requirements.

Do I need a permit for a new gas line?

Gas line work may require a permit, depending on the scope of the job and where your property is. We review this with you before the work starts so there are no surprises. Either way, every new line we install is pressure tested and checked for leaks before the gas is turned back on and appliances are put into service.

Can I install a gas line myself?

We strongly advise against it. A gas line has to be sized for the total load of your appliances, joined with the correct fittings and sealants, and pressure tested before use. Mistakes can cause leaks that are hard to detect and dangerous to live with. A licensed plumber has the equipment to install and test the line safely.
