Picking the Right Disposal

Before we install anything, we look at how your kitchen is used and what your drain connects to. The main choices are:

  • Motor size: a smaller motor suits light use, while a larger motor handles bigger households and tougher scraps
  • Continuous feed or batch feed: continuous feed runs with a switch, batch feed runs only with the cover in place
  • Sound insulation: helpful in open kitchens and condos
  • Your drain system: homes on septic or a cesspool need a model and habits that limit the solids sent to the tank

How We Install a Disposal

We start by checking the sink drain, the trap and the electrical supply under the sink to confirm they can support the unit. If there is an old disposal, we shut off power, disconnect it and remove it.

Next we set the sink flange with a proper seal and attach the mounting ring so the unit hangs level and does not vibrate loose. If you have a dishwasher, we remove the knockout plug in the disposal inlet and connect the dishwasher drain hose. That step is easy to miss, and skipping it leaves the dishwasher unable to drain. We connect the discharge to the trap at the right height, then make the electrical connection to code.

Before we call it done, we run water, grind a small amount of food waste and check every joint for drips. We also clear away the old unit and packaging.

Problems With DIY Installs

  • Leaks at the flange, the dishwasher inlet or the discharge tube, which can soak the cabinet and lead to mold
  • Electrical hazards from loose or unprotected wiring in a wet space
  • Jams and clogs from a unit that is undersized or a trap set at the wrong height

Do you install garbage disposals on all three islands?

Can I have a disposal if my home is on septic or a cesspool?

Often, yes, but it takes care. A disposal adds food solids to the tank, which can mean more frequent pumping. Choosing a suitable model and keeping grease and fibrous scraps out of the sink helps. Hawaii law requires cesspools to be upgraded, converted or closed by 2050, so we can also talk through what that means for your kitchen.

Why won’t my dishwasher drain after a new disposal went in?

The most common reason is the knockout plug. New disposals ship with a plug sealing the dishwasher inlet, and it has to be removed before the dishwasher hose is connected. If it is left in place, the dishwasher has nowhere to drain. We remove it and check the connection on every install that includes a dishwasher.

How do I keep a garbage disposal working well?

Run cold water before, during and after each use. Feed scraps in small amounts and keep grease, bones, fruit pits, coffee grounds and stringy peels out. Grinding a few ice cubes now and then helps clear residue. If the unit hums but does not spin, turn off the power before checking anything under the sink.

What should I check if my disposal stops working?

Start with the basics. Make sure the unit has power, press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal, and check whether the breaker has tripped. If it still will not run, or if it leaks, call a plumber rather than reaching inside. A real plumber answers our line 24/7 on all three islands.
