Common Toilet Problems and What Causes Them

  • Constant running or phantom refilling: usually a flapper that no longer seals, a fill valve that sticks, or a float set too high. A running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons a day.
  • Weak or incomplete flush: mineral crust in the rim jets, a low tank water level or a partial clog in the trap.
  • Water around the base: a failed wax ring, loose closet bolts, a cracked tank or a leaking supply line.
  • Rocking toilet: loose mounting, a damaged flange or, in older homes, a soft subfloor under the fixture.
  • Sewer smell: often a broken wax seal or a venting problem.
  • Gurgling or slow draining: a clog forming in the toilet or farther down the drain line.

We do not swap parts until something works. We check the tank components, the seal at the floor, the supply connection and the drain, and we find the actual cause first. Then we explain what we found and give you upfront pricing to approve before the repair starts.

When we replace a flapper, fill valve or flush valve, we also clean mineral buildup off the surrounding surfaces so the new part can seat properly. If we pull the toilet to replace the wax ring, we inspect the flange and the floor around it. If the toilet is cracked or too far gone, we tell you, and we can quote a replacement instead.

What to Do Before We Arrive

If the toilet is overflowing, turn the shutoff valve behind it clockwise to stop the water and do not flush again. If water is on the floor, mop it up so it does not spread under flooring. If the shutoff will not turn or the leak is coming from the supply line, shut off the main water to the house.

What usually causes a toilet to keep running?

The most common cause is a flapper that no longer seals against the flush valve, which lets water leak into the bowl and triggers a refill. A sticking fill valve or a float set too high can also cause it. Mineral buildup on the flapper seat is a frequent factor, so we clean it during the repair.

Why does my toilet leak at the base?

Water at the base usually means the wax ring under the toilet has failed, the closet bolts have loosened, or the toilet is rocking on a damaged flange. Less often, the tank or bowl is cracked. A base leak can damage the subfloor over time, so it is worth fixing soon rather than waiting.

Can a clogged toilet be a sign of a bigger drain problem?

Sometimes. If only one toilet clogs, the blockage is usually in that fixture. If several drains back up or gurgle at the same time, the problem may be in the main line, the building stack in a condo, or a septic or cesspool system. We check where the blockage is before clearing it.

Should I repair my toilet or replace it?

Worn flappers, fill valves and wax rings are inexpensive repairs and usually worth doing. A cracked tank or bowl, constant clogging despite service, or a very old high-volume model often makes replacement the better choice.
