Signs of a Hidden Leak

Many leaks give off small clues before they cause visible damage. Watch for:

How We Pinpoint the Source

We work from the least invasive step up. First we confirm the leak by shutting off fixtures and checking the meter. Next we isolate sections of the plumbing to narrow down whether the problem is on the supply side, the drain side or the main line. Pressure testing tells us which line is losing water, and camera inspection lets us see inside drain and sewer pipe without opening walls or digging.

How do plumbers find a hidden water leak?

Plumbers work from simple tests to more detailed ones. A meter test confirms water is being lost. Shutting off sections of the system narrows down which line is leaking. Pressure testing checks individual lines, and cameras let a plumber see inside drain and sewer pipe. The goal is to pinpoint the leak so only a small area needs to be opened.

Why not just repair the wet spot I can see?

The wet spot is often not where the leak is. Water travels along pipes, framing and slabs before it shows up, sometimes several feet from the actual break. Opening the wet area alone can mean cutting into the wrong wall or floor and still missing the problem. Finding the true source first keeps the repair smaller and prevents repeat damage.

Can I check for a leak myself before calling?

Yes, a simple meter test helps. Turn off every faucet, toilet and appliance that uses water, then look at the water meter. Check it again after an hour or so without using any water. If the reading changed, water is escaping somewhere. That tells you a leak exists, and a plumber can then trace where it is coming from.
