Repair or Replace?

A repair makes sense when the tank itself is sound and the problem is a part: a heating element, thermostat, gas valve, thermocouple or anode rod. Replacement is usually the better value when:

  • The tank is leaking from the body, not from a fitting or valve
  • The unit is past about ten years old
  • Rust shows up in the hot water or on the outside of the tank
  • Repairs have become frequent and costly
  • The tank no longer keeps up with your household

Common repair calls include an electric tank with one failed element, which gives a short burst of hot water and then lukewarm; a gas unit whose pilot will not stay lit because of a worn thermocouple; and popping or rumbling from sediment on the bottom of the tank. Each of these can often be fixed in one visit when the tank is still in good shape.

Hot Water in Hawaii Costs More

Hawaii has some of the highest electricity rates in the country, so heating water you do not use is expensive. A tank that is too large wastes energy every day it sits hot. How long does a tank water heater usually last?

Most tank water heaters last about eight to twelve years. Hard water, sediment, high temperature settings and a worn-out anode rod can shorten that. Homes on catchment water may see sediment build up faster. If your unit is near that age and starting to leak, rust or run out early, it is worth comparing repair and replacement costs.

What should I do if my water heater is leaking?

Shut off the cold water valve on top of the heater to stop more water from entering the tank. Turn off the power at the breaker for an electric unit, or set the gas valve to off for a gas unit. Then call us. A leak from the tank body usually means replacement, while a leak at a fitting or valve is often repairable.

Is a tank or tankless water heater better for my home?

It depends on your household, your fuel type and your budget. A tank costs less upfront and is simpler to replace. A tankless unit costs more to install but heats water only when you use it, which can lower energy use at Hawaii utility rates. We compare both for your home before you decide.

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Hawaii?

A water heater replacement may require a plumbing permit, depending on the county and the scope of the job. Either way, the installation needs to meet current code for strapping, relief valve discharge, drainage and venting. We handle the permit when one is needed so the work is safe and documented.

Can you repair my water heater instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If the tank is sound and within its expected life, parts like heating elements, thermostats, gas valves, thermocouples and anode rods can be replaced. We test the unit, tell you what failed, and give you the repair price next to the replacement price so you can choose.
