Why Pipes in Hawaii Homes Wear Out

Island plumbing faces corrosion from two directions. Near the coast, salt air settles on exposed metal under houses, in crawlspaces and along exterior runs, and it eats at pipe from the outside. Inside the line, older materials break down with age. Many Hawaii homes still have galvanized steel or aging copper, and both tend to fail along their length rather than at one weak joint.

That is why leaks often show up in clusters. When the material is failing throughout the house, the next weak point is already forming near the last repair. Replacing the run with new, corrosion-resistant pipe is how you stop chasing leaks.

Do you offer repiping on all three islands?

Yes. All Aloha Plumbing repipes homes on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. Our Oahu team is based in Waipahu and our Maui team is based in Makawao. On the Big Island we serve an area that includes Kailua-Kona, Hilo, Waimea, Waikoloa and Pahoa, and we set arrival windows based on where the property is.

How can I tell if I need a repipe instead of another repair?

Look at the pattern. A single leak in an otherwise sound system is a repair. Several pinhole leaks in different places, rusty or discolored water and pressure loss at multiple fixtures point to pipe material that is failing throughout the house. We inspect the system first and only recommend a repipe when the evidence supports it.

Does salt air really affect plumbing in Hawaii?

It can. Salt air near the coast speeds corrosion of exposed metal, including pipes under raised homes, in crawlspaces and on exterior walls. Combined with age, that outside corrosion is one reason older island homes with galvanized or copper lines develop leaks in clusters. Corrosion-resistant replacement pipe helps break that cycle.

What pipe material do you use for repiping?

We use PEX or copper, depending on your home’s layout, code requirements and what you prefer. PEX is flexible and can often be routed with fewer wall openings. Copper is rigid and long-established. Will I have water during a whole home repipe?

For most of the project, yes, with planned interruptions. We work in stages so the water is off only while we tie new lines into the system. Before we begin, we give you a schedule that shows when the water will be shut off, so you can plan showers, laundry or guest check-ins around it.
